Boldly cinematic and featuring astonishing performances from the two leads, The Selfish Giant is a contemporary fable about 13 year old Arbor and his best friend Swifty, born into a demoralized underclass fighting for dignity in post recession England. After meeting an unscrupulous local scrap dealer they enter a new and dangerous world of crime on an old horse and cart. Despite the risks, both boys seek what they can’t get at home, emotional bonds and respect. Beneath the fairytale-like, Wilde-influenced narrative, this film contains a passionate political subtext and pulls the viewer in until its ending which has been called “hauntingly perfect” and “jaggedly moving” by critics.
“A film of such power and beauty that there will be no escaping it.” – The New Republic
“Ms. Barnard, captures the milieu and personalities of her characters with tact and sensitivity.” – The New York Times
“Will have a very long shelf life and be watched for years to come.” – The Independent
